Youth at HUMM, also known as IN’SYNC (St. Paul’s Youth New Community), is open to students in 6th–12th grades, from both the Covenant and St. Paul’s congregations (Helena United Methodist Ministries). We welcome all friends, guests, and anyone curious in that age group. We are a spiritually inclusive youth group welcoming to ALL, following the teachings of Jesus by growing together in our love for God, each other, and ourselves. Where we learn to be In’Sync with our community, In’Sync with creation, In’Sync with ourselves, but most importantly, learn to be In’Sync with God.

What to expect...

  • Wednesday nights during the school year, the St. Paul’s congregation hosts a Community Dinner in the basement of the church that students are welcome to attend at 5:30 pm.

  • The youth room opens in St. Paul’s Susanna Wesley Place (2nd floor) at 6:00 pm for games, snacks, and hang-out time.

  • Youth Group officially begins at 6:30 pm with a game or activity, then Middle School and High School are broken up into smaller groups for a check-in time (sharing “happy’s and crappy’s”), devotional, and discussion.

  • The evening ends at 8:15-8:30 pm with another round of fun activities.

  • There are ALWAYS snacks, of course!

YOUTH MINISTRY

Student leaders do a great deal of the planning for the youth group, including organizing and running games, offering some of the devotionals, and creating discussion questions. Adult sponsors support students as mentors and guides, opening up opportunities for youth to grow not only in faith but also as community members and leaders. Our Youth Ministry Coordinator is Deaconess Molly King. She was raised all over the state of Montana as her father served United Methodist churches across the conference. She attended youth group at St. Paul’s UMC throughout high school and was excited to return back to Helena to help with the youth ministry. Her hobbies are powerlifting and spending as much time as she can out on the water during the summer months. For any questions about youth ministry, please contact Molly at youth@stpaulshelena.org or call (406) 499-2385.

Youth Ministry Activities

In addition to our weekly ministry, our youth have many special event opportunities, including;

  • Summer camps at Flathead Lake UMC Camp and Luccock Park Camp as both participants and counselors. This is financially supported through generous scholarships provided by St. Paul’s members.

  • Mission Trip in early summer is a week-long service/learning experience that builds community within the group, connects us to others in service, and builds our faith experientially. Fundraising throughout the year helps make this happen!

  • Convo is an annual event for United Methodist youth in Montana that typically takes place in the winter or spring.

  • Chrysalis is the youth version of a 72-hour retreat called Walk to Emmaus. Here in Helena, this is usually scheduled over the President’s Day weekend when Covid precautions allow.

  • School Holiday Activities include “fun days,” hands-on service opportunities, and lock-ins coordinated with other UM youth groups from Great Falls, Bozeman, and Butte.

  • Assisting with congregational ministries like Vacation Bible School, the Christmas Pageant, and other events for children where teen leadership is a huge help!
